PRINCE2 Programme Management is the current name for MSP (Managing Successful Programmes), the PeopleCert framework for managing related projects to deliver organisational change and measurable benefits. It is designed for programme managers and experienced project professionals moving into programme management, as well as people leading business change.

What is PRINCE2 Programme Management?

A project delivers a defined output or outcome. A programme coordinates related projects to achieve broader strategic objectives and realise benefits that may extend beyond the individual projects.

PRINCE2 Programme Management provides a structured framework for doing this. It connects project delivery with organisational strategy and provides guidance for managing transformational change. The framework is owned by PeopleCert, and the current guidance remains based on the MSP 5th edition syllabus.

Why was MSP renamed PRINCE2 Programme Management?

The change brings the established MSP certification into the wider PRINCE2 portfolio, creating a clearer relationship between its project and programme management qualifications. Other products have undergone similar changes, including M_o_R, now PRINCE2 Risk Management.

The change is to the product branding rather than the underlying qualification. The MSP 5th edition syllabus and assessment requirements remain unchanged. Existing MSP certificates also retain their validity and global recognition, so holders do not need to retake their qualification because of the new name.

The three pillars: principles, themes and processes

PRINCE2 Programme Management retains the three core elements of the MSP framework. Together, they provide guidance for making decisions throughout a programme and maintaining focus on the benefits it is intended to deliver.

Principles

The seven principles underpin the way a programme is managed:

  • Lead with purpose
  • Collaborate across boundaries
  • Deal with ambiguity
  • Align with priorities
  • Deploy diverse skills
  • Realise measurable benefits
  • Bring pace and value

They keep programme decisions connected to strategic intent without prescribing exactly how every activity should be carried out.

Themes

The seven themes address areas that require continual attention throughout a programme:

  • Organisation: establishes clear accountability and effective programme governance
  • Design: defines the future state and the outcomes needed to achieve it
  • Justification: confirms that the programme remains worthwhile and aligned with strategic objectives
  • Structure: establishes an appropriate delivery approach for achieving the programme’s outcomes
  • Knowledge: supports effective use of information and learning throughout the programme
  • Assurance: provides confidence that the programme remains on track and properly controlled
  • Decisions: supports timely, informed choices as the programme develops

Together, the themes provide a consistent basis for managing the programme as circumstances change.

Processes

The seven processes take the programme from initial identification through to closure: identify the programme; design the outcomes; plan progressive delivery; deliver the capabilities; embed the outcomes; evaluate new information; and close the programme.

Rather than treating transformation as a single delivery event, these processes support progressive change and continued attention to benefits.

PRINCE2 vs PRINCE2 Programme Management: what is the difference?

PRINCE2 Project Management and PRINCE2 Programme Management perform different jobs. One focuses on individual projects; the other coordinates related projects in pursuit of wider organisational objectives.

PRINCE2 Project Management PRINCE2 Programme Management
Scope Individual project Group of related projects
Focus Delivering agreed project outcomes Delivering strategic change and benefits
Typical role Project manager Programme manager
Success Successful project delivery Benefits realised across the programme

Project managers therefore often study PRINCE2 before progressing into programme management, but one framework does not replace the other. They may be used together where projects form part of a wider programme.

Foundation or Practitioner: which level do you need?

The right MSP certification level depends on whether you need to understand the framework or apply it in practice. Foundation establishes the core knowledge, whereas Practitioner is aimed at professionals who need to apply and tailor that knowledge in a programme environment.

PRINCE2 Programme Management Foundation introduces the key concepts behind programmes and the framework. It covers how the principles underpin programme management and how the themes are applied. Candidates also learn how the processes operate throughout the programme. There are no formal prerequisites for Foundation.

Practitioner moves from understanding the framework to applying and tailoring it in context. It is intended for professionals who need to use the guidance in real programme scenarios, and MSP Foundation (or MSP 4th edition Practitioner) must be passed before taking the Practitioner exam.

ILX also offers a combined Foundation and Practitioner route for learners who want to progress through both levels as one programme of study.

Is PRINCE2 Programme Management right for you?

PRINCE2 Programme Management is particularly relevant if your responsibilities extend beyond delivering one project. It suits programme managers and senior project managers moving towards programme responsibility. PMO leads or business change professionals may also benefit where their work involves coordinating related initiatives.

For individuals, certification develops a structured understanding of programme management and provides a recognised way to demonstrate that knowledge. Organisations gain a shared framework for connecting programme activity to strategic objectives and maintaining attention on benefits.

Yes. PRINCE2 Programme Management is the updated branding of MSP 5th edition. PeopleCert has confirmed that the syllabus and assessment requirements have not changed as part of the rebrand.

Can my team train together?

Yes. Organisations looking to develop programme management capability across a team can arrange training to establish a shared understanding of the framework and how it applies to their environment.
