PRINCE2® 6th Edition History

PRINCE was originally based on PROMPT, a project management method created by Simpact Systems Ltd in 1975. In 1989 PRINCE was established by the CCTA (the Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency), which subsequently changed its name to the OGC (the Office of Government Commerce).

When PRINCE was launched in 1989, it effectively superseded PROMPT within Government projects. PRINCE2 was published in 1996, having been contributed to by a consortium of some 150 European organisations. In June 2010, the OGC Best Practice Management functions moved into the Cabinet Office.

In July 2013, ownership of the rights to PRINCE2 was transferred from the Cabinet Office to AXELOS Limited. AXELOS Limited is a joint venture between the Cabinet Office and Capita plc.

In June 2017, the 6th Edition - an updated version of the official manual - was released. From July 10th, 6th Edition exams aligned to the new syllabus and manual were released. After a transition period where the 5th Edition and 6th Edition sets of exams were both available, since January 1st 2018, only exams aligned to the 6th Edition have been available.
