A lot has changed since 2019, not least the way we build and run digital products and services. That’s why ITIL® (Version 5) is needed. 

The new framework aims to reflect how modern organisations work today. But what’s actually changed and how different is the new edition from ITIL 4?

What’s staying the same?

Before we look at what’s changed in ITIL (Version 5), let’s explore what remains the same as previous editions. 

The core elements of the ITIL framework still form a key part of this new iteration, this includes the guiding principles, four dimensions of service management, service value system, and 34 practices.

This makes transition from ITIL (Version 5) easier for those already certified in ITIL 4 or previous iterations. 

What’s changed in ITIL (Version 5)?

Despite these core elements remaining the same, the new edition offers a series of major changes to better align the framework with modern practices.

Integration of products and services

ITIL (Version 5) brings digital products and services into one complete lifecycle. Instead of treating them separately it offers end-to-end guidance for managing both together, helping teams reduce friction, avoid silos, and deliver greater value consistently. 

Customer experience-driven adoption

The new framework offers a more practical and adaptable approach. This enables professionals to improve visibility, collaboration and decision-making based on customer and employee experience. 

AI-native guidance

One of the biggest challenges facing organisations today is AI adoption. To address this, ITIL (Version 5) incorporates AI-ready guidance across all courses and designations, as well providing an additional extension module focused solely on AI Governance. 

Alignment across the whole organisation

ITIL (Version 5) is built to work across the whole organisation, from leadership and strategy through to daily operations. With certifications aimed at professionals in a variety of roles, it’s designed to help teams align priorities and work better together.

Clearer role-based pathways

The updated framework offers simpler, more role-relevant pathways, with clearer expectations around roles and responsibilities. This makes it easier to choose the right route for you and apply what you learn directly to your work.

An updated series of certifications

Accompanying this updated guidance, is a whole new scheme of certifications. Starting with ITIL Foundation, professionals can progress through three different learning pathways: ITIL Practice Manager, Managing Professional and Strategic Leader, which when combined make up the ITIL Master designation.
