Course overview

This course introduces the core concepts and tools used in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) system administration. Through hands-on live labs and instructor-led sessions, you’ll cover command-line navigation, user and service management, networking, storage, and virtualisation.

Build a strong foundation in Red Hat 10 Administration

Taking this course builds strong awareness of how Red Hat Enterprise Linux works in a real-world environment. You’ll move beyond simply using Linux to understanding how the operating system is structured, how the kernel, shell and services interact, and how storage, networking and security are configured.

Learning objectives
  • Control permissions and enforce access
  • Configure networking and remote access
  • Manage packages with RPM, yum and dnf
  • Navigate and manage the Linux file system
  • Create and manage users and groups
  • Deploy virtual machines with KVM
  • Use systemd to manage services
  • Monitor performance and processes

What you'll learn

Gain the practical skills and technical understanding needed to confidently manage Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems. You’ll learn to handle users, permissions, networking, virtualisation, and key system services using both command-line tools and graphical interfaces.

Introduction to Linux

You’ll begin with an overview of Linux architecture, including the role of the kernel, the GNU project, and licensing under the GPL. You’ll explore how Red Hat fits into the Linux ecosystem and learn to access and customise the GNOME desktop environment. This course lays the groundwork for understanding how Linux systems function at both graphical and command-line levels.

Command-line essentials

Learn to work fluently in the Bash Shell, mastering shortcuts, command construction, and navigation. This includes using wildcards, pipelines, redirection, and built-in utilities to view, sort, and search files. You’ll also explore shell history, variables, aliases, and how to access documentation via man pages, info commands, and online resources.

User and service management

Learn how to create, manage and delete user accounts and groups, both via the command line and graphical tools. Configure password policies and user environments using Bash profiles. Then explore managing background services using systemd, checking statuses, enabling and disabling services, and ensuring clean shutdowns or reboots when needed.

Virtualisation and storage

Use KVM to install and manage virtual machines, checking hardware support and interacting via both GUI and CLI. You’ll also cover Linux storage technologies including RAID, block storage and Logical Volume Management (LVM), learning how to create, label, mount, resize and repair volumes and filesystems.

What’s included

FAQs

This ILX course introduces the fundamental skills required to manage Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems effectively. You’ll learn to work confidently with the command line, manage users and files, and administer services, building towards Red Hat certification and real-world application.

How does this course prepare me for the RHCSA exam?

This ILX course aligns with the official Red Hat curriculum and forms the first step toward achieving the Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) credential. It builds the foundational skills assessed in the EX200 exam, such as file permissions, system monitoring, user management, and software installation. Completing Part 1 and Part 2 of this course series provides comprehensive coverage of the RHCSA objectives.

What skills will I gain from this Red Hat Linux course?

You’ll gain practical, job-ready skills to help you manage Red Hat Linux systems confidently. These include using the command line, editing files, managing users and groups, configuring networking, monitoring processes, creating virtual machines, and managing software packages. These skills are highly transferable and sought after in IT support, system administration, and DevOps roles.

Is Red Hat Linux a good skill for IT careers?

Yes. Red Hat Linux is widely used in enterprise environments, especially in server administration, cloud computing, and DevOps. Learning Red Hat system administration helps build a strong foundation in open-source infrastructure and can lead to roles such as Linux Administrator, Systems Engineer or Cloud Specialist. It’s also a valuable skill for organisations that require stable and secure Linux deployments.

What’s the difference between Red Hat System Administration Part 1 and Part 2?

Part 1 introduces the core skills needed to operate and manage Red Hat Enterprise Linux, focusing on the fundamentals: command-line usage, file systems, users, networking, and services. Part 2 builds on this by covering advanced topics like storage management, firewall configuration, system automation and scheduled tasks. Together, they prepare you for the RHCSA certification and real-world system administration tasks.

How long does it take to learn Red Hat Linux administration?

This course takes five days to complete and is designed to fast-track your understanding of Red Hat system administration. By combining expert-led sessions with practical lab work, it provides a structured, intensive learning experience. While five days gives you a strong foundation, ongoing practice and further training (like Part 2) are recommended to deepen your skills and prepare for certification.
