Course overview

This course develops practical Oracle database performance tuning skills for versions 12cR2, 18c and 19c. Delivered by Oracle specialists in a live virtual classroom or classroom setting, the learning experience uses live labs to help you apply what you learn in real time.

Improve database performance with Oracle tuning expertise

Over five proactive days, this course gives you the opportunity to practise the tools Oracle DBAs use every day. Whether it’s tuning SQL, managing disk usage or tracking performance with diagnostic tools, you’ll leave with valuable technical skills and more confidence to support career progression.

Learning objectives
  • Identify and resolve slow-running queries
  • Tune SQL execution plans with practical tools
  • Improve memory and I/O handling
  • Work confidently with SQL Trace and Explain Plan
  • Apply smart indexing techniques
  • Analyse database performance with AWR and ADDM
  • Use built-in Oracle tools to support tuning
  • Optimise joins, views and query structures

What you’ll learn

Spot and solve common Oracle DBMS performance issues with the knowledge you gain from this focused course. In our practical live labs, you’ll work through realistic scenarios using the same tools and techniques real DBAs use daily to support database performance. At the end of the course, you’ll leave with a range of transferable skills that will enhance your career prospects.

Indexes and execution plans

Understand how indexes affect query performance and how to choose the right type for your use case. This session covers B-Tree, bitmap and function-based indexes, and shows you how Oracle uses these in different execution paths. You’ll also learn to interpret execution plans and identify when indexes are being bypassed, helping you make smarter optimisation decisions.

Real-time monitoring and diagnostics

Become familiar with Oracle's real-time performance monitoring features. You’ll use views and tools to monitor active sessions and database operations as they happen. Learn how to enable session tracing, interpret trace results, and make use of real-time metrics to respond quickly to performance dips. Ideal for DBAs who need to troubleshoot on a regular basis.

Automatic SQL tuning and statistics management

Explore how Oracle uses features like SQL Plan Management, the SQL Tuning Advisor, and automatic statistics gathering to enhance performance. You’ll discover how to collect and manage stats with DBMS_STATS, defer publishing where needed, and use advisors to fine-tune execution plans, helping you keep things running smoothly without constant manual intervention.

FAQs

ILX’s Oracle DBA course focuses on tuning skills for versions 12cR2, 18c and 19c. You’ll become proficient with tools like AWR, ADDM and SQL Tuning Advisor, all taught through practical labs with real-world relevance.

Is this course suitable if I’ve recently started working with Oracle databases?

It’s recommended that you already have experience with Oracle SQL and basic database administration. If you’ve taken a course like ILX’s Oracle SQL or Administration training, or have equivalent knowledge, you’ll be well placed to get the most from this course.

What about if I’m managing a legacy Oracle system?

No problem. We’ll cover 12cR2, 18c and 19c, so if you're still running 12cR2, you’re in the right place. Most of the tuning techniques we go through will work across all three versions, and you’ll have the opportunity to learn more about version specific aspects as the course develops.

How does the course help with managing SQL execution plans?

You’ll learn how to use Explain Plan, Autotrace and SQL Trace to examine SQL execution. The course also covers hints, indexing strategies and SQL Tuning Advisor, giving you multiple techniques to analyse and improve query performance effectively.

Does the course include memory and storage tuning?

Yes. You’ll explore how to configure and tune Oracle memory structures like the SGA, PGA, buffer cache and temporary space. It also covers I/O tuning techniques and Automatic Memory Management to help you boost performance and efficiency.
