Learn essential skills
Course overview

Enhance your Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 administration expertise with a course designed to bridge the gap between foundational knowledge and advanced system management. This programme builds on basic RHEL skills to introduce structured approaches for managing multi-user environments, implementing secure access controls, and optimising system performance.

Strengthen your confidence in managing RHEL 7 systems

Spanning five proactive days, this virtual instructor-led course provides focused, hands-on learning in intermediate Red Hat system administration. Ideal for IT professionals pursuing RHCE 7 or responsible for maintaining enterprise Linux environments.

Learning objectives
  • Edit files with vim
  • Use regex and grep tools
  • Prioritise and manage system processes
  • Perform Kickstart automated installs
  • Administer users, ACLs and directory services
  • Set up volumes, encryption and swap space
  • Secure with firewalld and SELinux
  • Share files via NFS, AutoFS, Samba
  • Handle software repositories and updates
  • Work with containers and troubleshoot systems

What you’ll learn

You’ll develop the capability to manage Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 systems at an intermediate level. The course builds on your existing skills to cover advanced configuration, storage, security, software management, and automation, using the recommended tools and techniques for RHEL 7 administration.

Automation and scripting

Discover how to streamline system administration tasks through automation. You’ll create Kickstart files to automate Red Hat installations and schedule tasks using cron, at, and anacron. In scripting, you’ll write shell scripts using positional parameters, loops, and conditional logic. These techniques are essential for repeatable, efficient system management and will support both your productivity and system reliability.

System security and SELinux

Explore comprehensive SELinux management techniques including viewing denials, relabelling files, modifying booleans and contexts, and creating custom policy modules. You’ll also configure SSH for secure remote access and understand how to align firewalld and SELinux policies. By mastering these tools, you’ll be able to protect your systems while maintaining usability and compliance across your infrastructure.

Containers and troubleshooting

Learn how to manage containerised applications with Red Hat tools including Podman, Skopeo and Buildah. You’ll explore the creation and maintenance of containers, attach persistent storage, and configure services. On the troubleshooting side, you’ll practise identifying and resolving boot issues, accessing the rescue environment, and recovering from common problems, providing you with essential skills for maintaining uptime and performance.

Kernel tuning and troubleshooting

Discover how to optimise system performance by managing kernel modules, adjusting kernel parameters, and creating tailored Tuned profiles. You’ll compare kernel architectures, load and remove modules, and fine-tune settings for specific workloads. The course also covers essential troubleshooting techniques, including analysing the Linux boot process, recovering from boot loader issues, resetting lost root passwords, and working in rescue mode to restore system functionality.

What’s included
  • Instructor-led live virtual training
  • Practical exercises with live labs
  • Course handbook for post-course reference
  • Expert trainers with Red Hat experience
  • Practical guidance on kernel parameter adjustments
  • Comprehensive coverage of Kickstart deployment methods
  • In-depth troubleshooting techniques for system recovery

FAQs

This course helps learners build real-world skills for managing RHEL 7 systems and supports progression towards RHCE 7 certification through practical, instructor-led learning.

Do I need prior scripting experience?

No prior scripting knowledge is required. The course introduces shell scripting from the ground up, starting with script creation and execution before moving into loops, positional parameters, and conditional statements for integers, strings, and files. You’ll also learn to build scripts that automate common administration tasks, improving efficiency and reducing manual workload.

How is SELinux covered?

You’ll gain a comprehensive understanding of SELinux security enforcement. This includes identifying and analysing SELinux denials, modifying contexts, adjusting booleans, and applying both temporary and permanent policy changes. The course also covers relabelling files at boot, configuring ports, and creating custom policy modules to meet specific security requirements.

What storage management topics are included?

You’ll work with both traditional and modern Linux storage management techniques. Topics include creating and extending physical volumes, volume groups, and logical volumes, configuring Stratis layered storage, and encrypting volumes with LUKS. You’ll also set up and manage swap files and partitions, label file systems, and configure persistent mounts for consistent access.

Will I learn how to automate installations?

Yes. The course covers Red Hat’s Kickstart tool in detail, showing you how to create configuration files, include pre- and post-installation scripts, and automate deployments over NFS, FTP, or Apache servers. You’ll also set up installation servers and customise configurations for repeatable, standardised builds.
