Learn essential skills
Course overview

Designed for Oracle Database Administrators, this course teaches you how to confidently transition to and manage Oracle’s multitenant environment. It builds the skills needed to streamline database operations, enhance performance, and implement security and recovery processes across container and pluggable databases.

Optimise performance and recovery in Oracle multitenant systems

Learn how to manage container and pluggable databases with confidence. You'll develop the ability to manage multitenant environments efficiently and securely. This course builds your awareness of how Oracle’s database architecture is evolving, and supports your ongoing development as a database professional.

Learning objectives
  • Build and configure container and pluggable databases to support multitenant architecture
  • Transition existing non-CDB environments into pluggable databases
  • Perform targeted backup and recovery tasks at the PDB level using RMAN
  • Implement user access controls and manage privileges
  • Monitor and optimise system performance with AWR and ADDM tools
  • Restrict user access and functionality within PDBs using lockdown profiles
  • Carry out data transfers and migrations using Oracle Data Pump utilities
  • Plan and execute upgrades to Oracle 19c with Database Upgrade Assistant (DBUA)

What you’ll learn

Understand how to transition to and operate effectively within Oracle 12c, 18c and 19c multitenant systems. This course covers cloning, relocating and upgrading databases, implementing lockdown policies, and using Oracle Data Pump for data migration.

Multitenant architecture

You will begin by learning the fundamentals of Oracle’s multitenant architecture, including how container databases (CDBs) and pluggable databases (PDBs) are structured and interact. The course explains why Oracle is moving away from the non-CDB model and shows how Oracle 19c allows the use of up to three PDBs without requiring a full multitenant licence.

Upgrades and data migration

Learn how to plan and carry out upgrades to Oracle 19c, using both the Database Upgrade Assistant (DBUA) and manual processes. This course covers the key considerations that should be taken before, during and after an upgrade, helping you minimise downtime and avoid common issues. You’ll also gain experience using Oracle Data Pump to migrate data efficiently between databases in a multitenant environment.

Backup and recovery techniques

Develop the skills needed to perform reliable backup and recovery operations in a multitenant environment. The course covers how to back up both container and pluggable databases, and how to restore and recover them using RMAN. Also, learn to manage point-in-time recovery, create restore points, and use flashback features to safeguard data and minimise disruption.

Creating and managing PDBs

Discover how to create and manage pluggable databases (PDBs) using a variety of methods, including cloning, hot cloning, and remote creation. The course also covers how to unplug, plug in, relocate, and refresh PDBs, helping you to manage database lifecycles effectively. You’ll gain practical skills for maintaining flexibility, scalability and control across your multitenant environment.

What’s included
  • 4 days of instructor-led training in a live virtual classroom
  • Interactive hands-on live labs
  • All relevant course materials
  • Course completion certificate

FAQs

This course provides a practical introduction to Oracle’s multitenant architecture, equipping you with the skills to create, manage and maintain container and pluggable databases. Cover essential tasks such as performance tuning, security configuration, and database upgrades across Oracle environments.

What is Oracle Multitenant Architecture and why does it matter?

Oracle Multitenant Architecture is Oracle’s updated way of structuring databases using containers (CDBs) and pluggable databases (PDBs). If you're still running older setups, this course helps you understand Oracle Multitenant Architecture so you’re ready to use current and future versions of Oracle.

Why should I switch to Oracle’s multitenant model?

With Oracle gradually phasing out the use of non-CDB setups, multitenant isn’t just the future, it’s the present. Developing an understanding of these environments now will allow you to use Oracle 12c, 18c and 19c, and prepare you for future versions of Oracle.

Is this course only for DBAs upgrading to 19c?

No, this course is designed for anyone looking to understand or manage Oracle’s multitenant architecture, whether you’re migrating or building new systems.

What is the difference between common and local users in Oracle multitenant?

In Oracle multitenant, a common user is created in the root container (CDB$ROOT) and can access and manage multiple PDBs, typically used for administrative tasks across the environment. A local user, on the other hand, is defined within a specific PDB and has access limited to that database only. This distinction helps maintain clear boundaries between shared and isolated access in multitenant environments.
