Across two proactive days, you’ll master the full lifecycle of installing and upgrading Oracle Database 12cR2 from planning and prerequisites through to post-upgrade optimisation. You’ll gain hands-on experience with essential DBA tools and utilities, so you can confidently replicate the process in your own production environment.Â
Creating databases with DBCA
You’ll explore how to create databases with the Database Configuration Assistant (DBCA) in both guided, interactive mode and automated silent mode. You’ll learn how to select between CDB (container) and non-CDB databases, choose the right storage method, configure character sets, and set the NLS_LANG parameter. You’ll also practise using response files for consistent, repeatable builds and explore how to create reusable design templates for future deployments.Â
Oracle Restart
Oracle Restart is an invaluable tool for ensuring high availability on standalone servers. In this course, you’ll learn to configure it to automatically monitor and restart key Oracle components after a system or process failure. You’ll discover how to start, stop and manage services, and see how the ohasd daemon underpins Restart operations. We’ll also look at adding and managing components in Oracle Restart and applying patches to the 12.2 home without disrupting service availability.Â
Pre-upgrade and post-upgrade tasks
Upgrades are most successful when planned and validated carefully. You’ll practise the entire upgrade lifecycle: assessing supported upgrade paths, running the Pre-Upgrade Information Tool, checking for compatibility with ORAchk, and creating a new Oracle home. You’ll perform upgrades using both DBUA and manual methods, handle failed upgrade recoveries, and complete post-upgrade actions such as enabling unified auditing, managing deprecated features, and validating performance. By the end of the course, you’ll know how to deliver a smooth upgrade process that minimises downtime and disruption.Â

Yes. The course includes a full walkthrough of installing and configuring Oracle Grid Infrastructure for standalone servers, including setting prerequisites, creating the required directories and groups, configuring ASM storage, and enabling Oracle Restart for high-availability service management.Â
Is Data Pump migration covered in this course?
Yes. You’ll migrate databases using Oracle Data Pump, including full database transport and network-based imports. We discuss when migration is preferable to direct upgrade, and you’ll practise reducing downtime during the process.Â
Will I learn how to roll back if an Oracle database upgrade fails?
Yes. The course includes guidance on handling upgrade failures and safely rolling back to a stable state. You’ll practise identifying and resolving common errors, restoring backups, and re-running upgrade processes after making corrections. This ensures you can recover quickly and minimise downtime if an upgrade in your live environment does not go as planned.Â
