Recently achieved an ITIL® 4 certification or in the process of completing your training? With the launch of ITIL (Version 5) this week you’re probably questioning how best to move forward.
The good news is there are clear pathways designed to help you transition from the previous edition, while bringing your knowledge up to date with the new topics covered in ITIL (Version 5). In this blog, we’ll explore the multiple transition routes available, offering guidance on the best option for you.

ITIL 4 Foundation gives you an understanding of the core concepts that still underpin the new framework. As such, it remains a valid prerequisite for the advanced qualifications now included in ITIL (Version 5). This means you can progress directly from ITIL 4 Foundation into the new Practice Manager, Managing Professional or Strategic Leader designations.
The ITIL 4 Practice Manager designation is built around the development of practical, job-ready capability, this remains true for the new certification too.
If you’re a certified ITIL 4 Practice Manager, you can transition to the new version by completing ITIL Transformation (Version 5). No other course is required.
To ease the move from ITIL 4 to Version 5 for those certified at this level, PeopleCert are introducing a Managing Professional transition course and exam. This will serve as a direct route to update your designation qualification. It focuses on the new elements introduced across the ITIL Product, ITIL Service, ITIL Experience, and ITIL Transformation courses.
Despite the launch of Version 5, with its focus on leadership, strategic direction and governance, ITIL 4 Strategic Leader remains highly relevant. To transition to the new edition, you just need to complete ITIL Transformation (Version 5) training.
To update your ITIL 4 Master certification to Version 5 you need to complete the Managing Professional transition course and exam. This module is designed to bridge the gap between new and old concepts. It will allow you to update your expertise by covering the key areas explored in ITIL Product, ITIL Service, ITIL Experience and ITIL Transformation (Version 5).
There is currently no planned date for the retirement of ITIL 4. These certifications are expected to remain available for at least the next 12 months while the roll out of new ITIL (Version 5) courses is ongoing.
This will give you plenty of time to complete any existing ITIL 4 training that is underway and plan for your necessary transition steps.
For ITIL 4 certified professionals the launch of Version 5 offers an opportunity to update your existing knowledge without having to start fresh from Foundation.
