Learn essential skills
Course overview

Understand how to proactively manage database performance, interpret complex reports, and apply proven techniques that improve efficiency and support business-critical operations. This course is ideal if you want to sharpen your Oracle 19c performance tuning expertise and gain experience using key diagnostic tools.

Optimise performance, reduce downtime, and gain valuable DBA skills

Across five practical days, you’ll actively engage in diagnosing and resolving performance challenges in Oracle databases. Beyond just troubleshooting, the course helps you develop a systematic approach to performance management, so you can proactively identify risks and make improvements before issues escalate.

Learning objectives
  • Identify and address slow-running queries
  • Tune SQL using trace and explain tools
  • Understand and manage database statistics
  • Configure memory and storage efficiently
  • Use AWR and ADDM to analyse performance
  • Read and improve SQL execution plans
  • Optimise key Oracle memory structures
  • Pinpoint and resolve common wait events
  • Apply proven techniques for performance tuning

What you’ll learn

This course focuses on practical performance tuning, covering key areas such as SQL optimisation, memory configuration, and storage management to improve overall efficiency. You’ll develop a clear understanding of Oracle’s diagnostic tools and learn how to identify and resolve performance issues before they affect database operations.

Monitoring and tools

Gain confidence using Oracle’s core diagnostic tools, including AWR (Automatic Workload Repository), ADDM (Automatic Database Diagnostic Monitor) and ASH (Active Session History). We’ll show you how to read and make sense of reports, use baselines and snapshots to track changes, and set up alerts and thresholds to stay ahead of issues. You’ll also explore Performance Hub and metric views, ensuring you can spot problems before they affect users.

Real-time monitoring

Understand how to monitor operations in real-time using Oracle. You’ll learn how to enable and manage database operations, as well as track sessions and workloads. Using tools such as DBMS_MONITOR and active session tracing, you will gain insights into current database activity, enabling you to identify and address performance issues as they occur.

Big data and warehouse features

Explore performance tuning strategies tailored to large-scale workloads and modern data handling. You’ll learn about automatic indexing, advanced and basic compression methods, and how Oracle handles real-time stats collection during DML operations. We’ll also cover scalable sequences, bitmap-based count functions, and features designed to reduce SQL overhead. Whether you’re supporting a traditional data warehouse or diving into high-volume analytics, you’ll walk away with practical techniques to make your Oracle environment run smoother and faster.

FAQs

Learn how to optimise SQL, memory and I/O, and develop the skills needed to proactively manage and resolve performance issues.

Will I learn how to use tools such as SQL Trace or Autotrace?

Yes, the course covers how to use SQL Trace, Autotrace and Explain Plan to analyse SQL execution and identify performance issues. You’ll learn how to interpret the results and use them to optimise queries effectively.

How is memory and storage tuning covered in this course?

This course includes dedicated sessions on tuning the System Global Area (SGA), Program Global Area (PGA), and buffer cache to improve memory efficiency. It also covers techniques for optimising disk I/O, configuring temporary tablespaces, and managing storage layout to reduce contention and enhance performance.

Will I gain practical experience with Oracle performance tuning methods?

Yes, the course includes extensive practical exercises that allow you to apply tuning techniques in a simulation environment. You’ll work directly with tools such as Explain Plan, SQL Trace, AWR, and ADDM to analyse performance data and implement improvements.
