Transitioning from ITIL® v3 to ITIL (Version 5)

For individuals already certified in ITIL® v3, the Version 5 framework offers an opportunity to greater align your knowledge with modern practices without starting completely from scratch. The new certification scheme builds on existing concepts to ensure ITIL continues to address today’s digital product and service challenges. 

Whether you’ve just achieved ITIL Foundation or reached ITIL Expert in the previous version, there is a recommended pathway to follow. Keep reading to find the right route for you. 

Where do I start if I’m certified in ITIL v3 Foundation?

If you’re certified in ITIL v3 Foundation, it’s recommended that you start from ITIL Foundation (Version 5). This will allow you to refresh your existing knowledge and introduce you to any new concepts from the latest edition. 

What should I do if I’ve reached ITIL v3 Intermediate or Capability?

If you’ve reached ITIL v3 Intermediate or Capability, it is still advised that you start from ITIL Foundation (Version 5).

This new iteration introduces many additions that ITIL v3 certified professionals will be unfamiliar with. Given this, completing the Foundation course before progressing further into the Practice Manager, Managing Professional or Strategic Leader designations will ensure you understand any new concepts. 

What should I do if I’m a certified ITIL v3 Expert?

If you are a certified ITIL v3 Expert, you’re eligible to move straight into the ITIL Managing Professional (Version 5) pathway. 

To ensure you are familiar with any concepts introduced in the new edition PeopleCert are building a transition module. However, the details of this are yet to be confirmed. If you’d like to progress without waiting, start with the Foundation course which is available now. 

What should I do if I’m a certified ITIL v3 Master?

If you’re a certified ITIL Master, the recommended next step is to start with ITIL Foundation (Version 5). This gives you an overview of the new edition and helps align your existing knowledge with the latest content and practices.
