Course overview

Led by our expert trainers, this four-day course is designed for DBAs looking to master Oracle RMAN and flashback features. It explores disaster recovery, media failure resolution, and recovery of corrupted or deleted data through guided learning and lab exercises

Safeguard your Oracle databases with RMAN

Over four days, this training gives you a deep understanding of how to protect data, recover from errors, and minimise downtime, all while building the confidence to handle complex scenarios in a live Oracle environment. The course enhances your technical capabilities and helps prepare you for Oracle Database Administration II certification.

Learning objectives
  • Design and validate Oracle backup and recovery plans
  • Perform and manage backups with Oracle RMAN
  • Recover databases, datafiles, and tablespaces confidently
  • Use compression and encryption in Oracle backups
  • Create and maintain a recovery catalogue
  • Apply Oracle flashback features to fix user errors
  • Clone and duplicate databases for recovery or testing
  • Optimise, monitor and troubleshoot Oracle backup tasks

What you’ll learn

Build confidence in managing a wide range of backup and restore scenarios using RMAN and Oracle’s Flashback tools. The training covers the complete use of RMAN for performing and automating backup operations, along with configuring and maintaining a recovery catalogue.

Recovery scenarios

Discover how to manage recovery in even the most critical of situations. This course teaches you how to respond to complete database failures, recover lost tables, and address corrupted data blocks. You’ll learn how to use RMAN for both full and point-in-time recovery, restoring individual datafiles or tablespaces, and recovering databases operating in Noarchivelog mode. Also, understand how to use Oracle’s Flashback features to undo accidental deletions or user errors without needing to perform a full database restore.

Cloning and duplication

Cloning a database is a common task when testing, developing, or setting up recovery systems. In this course, you’ll learn how to safely create duplicate Oracle databases using RMAN. We’ll guide you through the setup of auxiliary instances, file management, and creating duplicates either from backups or live systems. You’ll also explore targetless duplication and the use of Oracle Cloud Control to make the process even smoother. Whether you’re planning disaster recovery or refreshing your test environment, these techniques can help you save time and reduce risk.

Tuning and troubleshooting

Even with a well-configured system, issues can still occur, so it is important to recognise potential problems and ensure backups continue to operate reliably. This course teaches you how to track RMAN activity, use Oracle logs to identify problems, and fix performance issues before they impact your recovery windows. You’ll also learn how to avoid common bottlenecks, use multiplexing effectively, and follow best practices for tuning backup and restoring operations.

What’s included
  • 4 days of instructor-led training in a live virtual classroom
  • Interactive hands-on live labs
  • All relevant course materials

FAQs

This practical course shows you how to back up and recover databases using Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN) and flashback. You’ll be equipped with the practical knowledge required to protect and restore data in complex environments.

Will this course help with real incidents I might face at work?

This course is specifically designed to help you address issues that may occur in the workplace. You’ll gain practical experience in restoring lost data, recovering from corruption, performing point-in-time recoveries, and duplicating databases for testing purposes. The scenarios used reflect common challenges faced by Oracle database administrators, making the content both relevant and immediately applicable.

How does RMAN differ from manual backup methods in Oracle?

RMAN (Recovery Manager) is Oracle’s built-in tool for automating backup and recovery tasks. Unlike manual methods that rely on scripts and operating system utilities, RMAN provides a more efficient, reliable, and secure way to perform backups, apply incremental changes, validate recovery processes, and manage backup metadata.

What is the Flash Recovery Area (FRA) in Oracle, and how is it configured?

The Flash Recovery Area (FRA) is a dedicated storage location for Oracle recovery-related files, including backups, archived redo logs, and Flashback logs. In this course, you’ll learn how to configure and manage the FRA, monitor its space usage, and use it effectively as part of your overall backup and recovery plan.

Will I learn how to perform point-in-time recovery in Oracle?

Yes. The course covers both complete and point-in-time recovery (PITR) techniques using RMAN. You’ll practise recovering databases, tablespaces, and individual data blocks to a specific point in time, helping to minimise data loss and restore service quickly after incidents.
