PRINCE2™ Consultancy Services

PRINCE2 Logo

PRINCE2™ is a fully featured, robust and highly flexible project management method that can be used to enable the delivery of virtually any business project in any situation. Since its launch in 1996 it has become virtually the de-facto 'best practice' standard for project management in public and private sector organisations across the UK and increasingly, the world.

HOWEVER:

Successful implementation of PRINCE2™ is not guaranteed just because all project staff have been trained. Implementing PRINCE2™ effectively means tailoring the method to meet your own unique requirements as well as building on, and integrating with existing practices.

We always recommend PRINCE2™ is implemented as a PRINCE2™ project. Taking this approach reinforces the implementation of the method by role modeling behaviors and by eventually incorporating the governance of the project into the new governance process. The project will therefore ultimately close under the control of the process that it put in place.

To avoid the implementation being seen as ‘just another initiative’, the internal champion within the organisation role, models the behavior that will be expected of all other peers, staff and interested parties during the execution of this project and beyond.

As a first step we would ask the ‘project board’ to sign off an initial ‘scoping’ project stage to perform an ‘organisational review’. The output is a project initiation document and the initial project plan.

At this point the delivery of the remaining project is defined within a project plan tailored to your specific organisational need. This can then be delivered in stages, under the full control of the ‘project board’.

Implementation

Traditionally, implementation of the method into organisations has focused on training project managers to achieve two examinable standards (PRINCE2™ Foundation and PRINCE2™ Practitioner). Once trained, project managers are expected to follow the method and as a result, deliver better projects. Unfortunately this strategy on its own, nearly always fails to deliver desired business benefits to the organisation.

To deliver its promised benefits, PRINCE2™ must be deliberately tailored and proactively implemented to meet the requirements of each individual organisation and to some extent, each project as well. Failure to do so not only renders the method all but ineffective, it can actually have a detrimental effect on project delivery.

Where no proactive implementation of PRINCE2™ has taken place, use of the method is more often than not perceived as unwieldy, bureaucratic and simply an exercise in form filling. Most often when this is the case, use of the method is quietly pushed to one side and project managers told (explicitly or implicitly) to "just get on with it". This situation is so common it even has its own acronym PINO (Prince in Name Only)!

PRINCE2™ has the ability to add enormous value to organisations, but only if implemented effectively and intelligently.
